Bebelplatz ◆ 360° – Staging the square ◆ Opera et Luce

GLAMOROUS APPEARANCE OF THE OPERA

Mission: Outstanding event for an outstanding occasion
It was a milestone for the cultural scene! October saw the reopening of the Berlin State Opera and the opera’s 275th anniversary at the same time. This occasion was to be staged in a special way as part of the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS. After all, it is one of the most important music stages in the world.

Idea: A 360° symphony of light
Opera et Luce – never seen before. A 360° staging of Bebelplatz united the buildings on this traditional square into a perfectly coordinated overall composition. On display was a 3D video mapping show on the 275-year history of the State Opera. The show consisted of 5 acts, which provided a look behind the scenes and presented selected premiere milestones of the State Opera.

Implementation: as virtuosic as a grand opera
All the technical possibilities of modern light staging were finely coordinated and combined into one composition. It was important to the Festival of Lights team to always place the opera and its music at the center of the light show. The technology was at the service of the cultural theme. 3D video mapping, static image projections, light and music merged into a single unit and the spectators in the large circular square were literally “right in the middle of it all”.

Outcome: a 360° success

The FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS media channels covered the event in detail. The new artistic director of the State Opera, Matthias Schulz, sat on the podium at the festival press conference and announced the event. And photos of the event went around the world – preferably in panorama format.

With the opening, the Berlin State Opera set an example that pointed to the future. Bebelplatz became a magnet for visitors to the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS and hype in the media and social networks.
