“Kein Raum” – An artistic journey into the freedom of visibility
Mission:
As part of the 20th Festival of Lights 2024, under the motto “Celebrating Freedom”, the project “KEIN RAUM-Begegnungen mit Menschen ohne Obdach” was launched in cooperation with Caritas and photographer Debora Ruppert. The aim was to make the invisible reality of homelessness visible and raise awareness of the fate of homeless people.
Idea & implementation:
The Festival of Lights team implemented this aim through an impressive artistic projection in public spaces. As a symbol of visibility, important Berlin facades were selected to present the powerful black and white photographs by Debora Ruppert. Her series of 31 portraits and quotes showed the dignity and hardship of the lives of people without shelter and made their often invisible existence impossible to overlook.
The projections took place at the following locations in Berlin:
- Front of St. Mary’s Church
- Leipziger Straße
- Stresemannstraße
- Memorial Church
- Eberswalder Straße
Each of these projections helped to bring the issue of homelessness to the forefront of Berlin’s public eye and encouraged the public to engage with the stories depicted.
Success
The projections created an impressive dialog between art and social responsibility. They brought the issue of homelessness directly to the streets of Berlin and showed the power of art as a medium for change and awareness. The collaboration with Caritas and Debora Ruppert showed how visual art can help to make social grievances visible and raise public awareness. The projection “No Space” was perceived by both the public and the media as a powerful representation of empathy and social responsibility.
